The Venture Theatre begins its run of Handbagged, a clever political comedy by Moira Buffini, tonight (Thursday).

Premiered in 2013, the play explores the relationship between the Queen and Margaret Thatcher with charm, wit, affectionate comedy, and razor-sharp commentary.

Handbagged probes Margaret Thatcher's legacy through her weekly meetings with the Queen and includes some of the leading figures of the time: Kenneth Clark, Gerry Adams, Ronald Reagan, Geoffrey Howe and more.

Sunday sees the Aldi Ashby 20 running event return to the town - with a finish at the Bath Grounds for the Ivanhoe Runners-organised event.

It is a 20-mile road race organised by runners for runners. Starting on Upper Packington Road at 10am, up to 1,500 runners from throughout the UK, will be pounding the roads.

They will follow the road towards Packington before heading towards Heather, via Swepstone.

They will then head back towards Packington via Normanton Le Heath.

After completing the second lap they will head back towards Ashby, finishing on the Bath Grounds.

The early runners will start finishing around 11:45, with the vast majority finishing between 12.30 and 1.30.

More details are HERE.

Last year's event saw the Aldi team run as Cuthbert the Caterpillar

Next Wednesday, The Lyric Rooms hosts Funhouse Comedy's 'Should I Stay or Should I Go?' competition to Ashby.

Immensely popular at other Funhouse venues, it's a competition where 10 of the best rising stars on the circuit go head-to-head for a £100 prize, but after they have been on stage, five audience judges with red and green cards decide whether they stay or go!

If they survive seven minutes then they make it to the final at the end of the night, where each finalist does another 60 seconds before the whole audience picks a winner.

It is a highly entertaining show. Acts including Josh Pugh and Scott Bennett played their first ever gigs on one of these nights and a previous winner was James Acaster, so you could well be seeing a future superstar.

Also on Wednesday, Ashby Film Nights is showing Past Lives.

This superb Korean-Canadian film is the story of lost love and a childhood crush set against the migrant experience.

Na Young (played by Greta Lee) ponders the alternative life that could have been, staying behind in the old country, versus the one that went abroad for a new future.

Beautifully acted, this slow burn film has received 5-star reviews and BAFTA and Oscar nominations.

The film is in a mix of English and Korean (with subtitles), and will be shown at Ashby School in Nottingham Road.

More details are HERE.

It is St Patrick's Day on Sunday and Brew in Market Street is marking the occasion with a party.

From 2pm on, the craft beer bar plans live music. Irish themed beers and a great craic!
