County Council to make South Street road markings clearer - but says drivers should see one-way signs already in place
Leicestershire County Council has agreed to extra road markings after concerns over motorists driving the wrong way on South Street's one-way system.
But the authority says it will not agree to a request for clearer signage informing drivers of the flow of traffic.
Ashby de la Zouch Town Council wrote to the county council following a planning committee meeting in November, to highlight the problem.
Councillors discussed instances of motorists driving the wrong way - or simply ignoring the no entry notices.
It was also pointed out at the time that there should be signs at the Town Council's car park at Legion House, to remind drivers that it is a right-turn only when exiting into South Street.
A letter from County Hall was presented to Ashby councillors at last month's planning committee.
It said: "A site assessment has been undertaken and officers are satisfied that the no-entry signs and markings on South Street are correctly sited at the start of the one-way system.
"The ahead only signs are clearly position for motorists to see when entering Lower Church Street. We can confirm that all existing signage to meet the requirements in accordance with the Department for Transport guidance.
"You may appreciate that no amount of signage would prevent some motorists from contravening the one-way system.
"Motorists should ensure they carry out the necessary planning of routes before embarking on a journey. If some motorists are driving the wrong way, regrettably, this is a behavioural matter."
But the county council says there is room for some improvements.
It added: "We will arrange to install arrow markings on the carriageway within the entire one-way section and ensure some are sited outside the dentist and funeral exits.
"With regards to your request for signage or markings near the car park, we are unable to accede to this request as this is not within the one-way system.
"The Town Council may wish to install signage within the car park at the exit, and consider replacing the existing straight-ahead arrow for a left-turn arrow marking, as this may be of some assistance and encourage motorists to turn left out of the car park.
"Motorists should be aware of and recognise road signs, and ensure they take appropriate action, according to the information on the sign or markings.
"Once the new markings are in situ, should motorists ignore these and drive in breach of the order, then this is a police matter, and should be reported to them to further investigate where necessary.
"There is nothing the County Council can do in this respect."
