Rainbow flags appeared in Ashby today ahead of the town's first Pride Day next month.

The flags - symbolising the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equality - were unveiled in Market Street and at Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's Legion House offices in South Street.

A number of Ashby bars have already said they will be part of the day on July 1 - and new Mayor Avril Wilson has already lent her support to the event.

Around 10 entertainment venues across the town are expected to be taking part.

The event will be held on the 51st anniversary of the UK's first Pride event in 1972.

A release issued last month said: "It is with great pleasure that we can now announce the organisation of Ashby de la Zouch's first ever Pride event for 2023

"Ashby pride will take place on Saturday, July 1, beginning at 12 noon, then continuing throughout the day and into the evening.

"We are so proud that the event will be taking place across 10 different entertainment venues within the town, each hosting their own special Pride themed event.

"More details surrounding the day's entertainment schedule will follow in the coming weeks, make sure you follow their social media accounts to stay up-to-date.

"Pride is deep-rooted in history as the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equality."
