Ashby Mayor, Labour councillor Avril Wilson, has expressed her backing for the town's first Pride festival which takes place next month.

At its June meeting members of the North West Leicestershire branch of the Labour Party said they will be among the festival goers, experiencing all the fun of the day and on hand to offer support to all those attending.

On July 1, Market Street will be adorned with rainbows, music and a carnival atmosphere as Ashby hosts the first event of its kind in the town, openly and joyously celebrating the incredible efforts that members of the LGBTQ+ community have made to be recognised - and to let the world know that they are an equal, vital part of the community.

The Labour Party says it is passionate that everyone in society has the right to have their voices heard and to feel valued.

Cllr Wilson said: "Recognising the atmosphere of the event, this will be a fantastic opportunity for me to meet people from across the community and discuss the importance of working locally and nationally to recognise equality for everyone."

She added she may or may not have her Mayoral regalia on, but promised to wear at least one rainbow.

For further information on the event please visit the Ashby Pride page on Facebook.
