Payment Machine successfully installed at Ashby’s new Money Hill car park

A new payment machine has been installed at the new Money Hill car park in Ashby.
The initial decision was to only use a pay-by-phone option, which was controversial among local people, claiming it was 'indirect discrimination' for those who are unable or unwilling to use a smart phone. There were also issues caused by patchy phone signal, making it difficult for people to pay.
Ward councillor Murrae Blair-Park and Communities Leader Peter Moult, with support from the Labour Group, called for the introduction of a payment machine in the car park, which has now been achieved.
Cllr Murrae Blair-Park said: 'We're pleased that a payment machine has now been installed to offer card and contactless payment. This is a victory for common sense and fairness.
'Many people, especially older residents and those without smartphones, were being excluded from the original decision.
'With town parking at a premium, this new facility must be as easy to use as possible. That also includes ensuring it is well signposted and working ward to reopen the public right of way back into the town centre, which has been recently closed.
'I'm continuing to work closely with town and district councillors, alongside our MP Amanda Hack, to ensure the link between the town centre and this car park for pedestrians is as accessible as possible in the future to encourage more usage.'
Communities Leader Peter Moult said: 'This is about accessibility and inclusion. Public facilities like car parks must be designed for everyone, not just those comfortable with digital-only systems. We're glad to see the council respond to our call, but we'll continue to monitor the situation to ensure the system works smoothly for all users.'
