A plaque to commemorate the life of former Ashby doctor Mark Baker is to be unveiled at the Elite Tuition Group office in Market Street on Saturday.

The organisers are hoping that anyone with memories of Dr Baker - who would have been living in Ashby in the early 1950s - will come forward and attend the lunchtime event.

Mr Baker was the town's doctor, based in Market Street, when he died in a well after being called out to an incident in Ticknall.

On August 17, 1955, Dr Baker received an early morning call to go to Tadsar Farm where two men had got into difficulties in a deep well.

But he himself became trapped and was overcome by fumes.

The former doctor's surgery is now occupied by the Elite Tuition Group, who will be hosting the unveiling at around 1pm.

Dr Baker's daughter and family are attending, and it is hoped that anyone with personal stories could be there - and perhaps bring any photos they may have.
