Storm Goretti has arrived in Ashby overnight, bringing heavy snow and dangerous driving conditions. This has led to local schools and businesses closing and emergency services working overtime to get to those in need of help.

Ivanhoe School, Ashby School and Sixth Form, Pingle School and Ashby Hastings Primary School are just a few of the schools in the area shut due to bad weather conditions.

Many local businesses have also been forced to close, including The Courtyard Café in Ashby, along with the Inspire Youth Collective and Bright Hope House.

North West Leicestershire Police have asked residents to keep travel to a minimum, only doing so if it is essential due to dangerous conditions on roads and pavements.

Vehicles were stranded overnight on the A42 near Ashby as heavy snow stopped cars and lorries getting through. The A42 was shut at around 2.30am this morning with numerous vehicles getting stuck between junction 14 and 13, with delays of up to 60 minutes in the surrounding area.

Police have also shut the A5, due to lorries blocking the roads and reported bad conditions on Alton Hill between Packington and Ravenstone where a large vehicle blocked the road this morning.

East Midlands Airport closed their runway last night due to heavy snow. Although it is now reopened, they are urging anyone flying today (Friday) to check with the airline before beginning their journey to the airport.

East Midlands Railway has 'strongly advised' against travelling unless essential as many service are being delayed or cancelled.
