Ashby de la Zouch Town Council now has a very different look to it following Thursday's local government elections.

The council is now Labour-controlled as a series of Conservative councillors lost their seats.

Some well-known Tory councillors will now no longer be present in committee meetings.

But a number of new names, from different parties, have been elected.

Established councillors have lost their seats, including Leicestershire County Council leader, Nick Rushton, in the Ivanhoe Ward, although he will still sit on North West Leicestershire District Council.

Mary Tuckey was not re-elected in Castle Ward, while Roger Bayliss lost out to three Labour candidates in Holywell Ward.

That included Liz Parle and Avril Wilson who retained their seats following last year's by-election victory.

Current Ashby Mayor, John Deakin, and Geraint Jones lost out as Labour returned three elected candidates from Willesley Ward.

Gill Hoult and Brian Beggan were also beaten as three Labour candidates were elected from Ivanhoe Ward.

In Money Hill Ward, former Leicestershire County Council chairman Dan Harrison, along with Mike Ball, lost out.

But there will be new Conservative councillors in Kenny Horn, who polled the most votes in Castle Ward and founded Ashby Sport, and restaurant owner Pejman Zamani, from the Money Hill election.

Andrew Woodman was also elected in Blackfordby Ward along with Rita Manning.

Carl Benfield will now represent the Green Party at town council level and is also a member of the Campaign to Re-open the Ivanhoe Line.

But it is the Labour Party who will now form the greater share of Ashby Town Council.

Joining David Bigby, Avril Wilson and Liz Parle, will be Damilola Ojuri, Alison Morley, Gregory Parle, David Whetton, Murrae Blair-Park, Douglas Cooper, Christopher Smith and Thomas Stanley.
