News that the planned Ivanhoe Line has moved a step closer to seeing passenger trains stopping in Ashby again after a gap of almost 60 years, has been welcomed by many of the town's residents.

But it has also raised one important question - where would the new station be?

We reported on Saturday morning that the scheme - led by the Campaign to Re-open the Ivanhoe Line (CRIL) - had been given the green light by the Government to move one step further to returning to the town.

The Ivanhoe Line is part of the Restoring Your Railway initiative - and one of nine routes currently being backed by the Government.

The news provoked plenty of comments on our Facebook page over the weekend.

And many readers addressed the subject of where an Ashby station would be,

The former station - off Station Road - is now home to offices.

The suggestions made included a platform on the other side of the former station; building a platform on the bank the other side of the bridge, overlooking the Bath grounds; or having one on the outskirts of Ashby.

Ashby Nub News understands that it will be up to the relevant local authorities - North West Leicestershire District Council and South Derbyshire District Council - to decide where the stations would go.

The next stage will involve consultations on station sites those local authorities.

CRIL does not have an opinion on exactly where the stations will be.

The only one that is fixed is Castle Gresley, which is in the South Derbyshire Local Plan.
