Rising Ashby music star Sekou Sylla's home town gig has been cancelled following discussions with the Venture Theatre and police.

Sekou had been preparing for Sunday's appearance at Glastonbury with a show in Ashby next Thursday night (June 23).

He also said he would play two of his songs outside the theatre, after the gig sold out in just 32 seconds.

Sekou, who studied at Ashby School, said he wanted to stage a free show in the town he grew up in.

That meant he was to have been appearing at the low-key Venture Theatre in North Street.

The BBC Radio One supported show was scheduled ahead of a Glastonbury show the following Sunday.

Sekou is scheduled to appear between 12.50-1.15pm on the BBC Music Introducing stage.

Tickets - thought to be limited to less than 100 - were made available at 7pm last Wednesday.

But they soon went, and Sekou posted a message on social media to thank fans.

However, following police advice, the theatre was forced to call off the event

It has no land on which to perform outdoors and no way of limiting numbers attending the free event.

The theatre had planned for just 70 guests to be given tickets.

But, what is described as 'a misleading message' came out encouraging many more to attend.

The police were then concerned about uncontrollable numbers attending.

The Venture Theatre says it 'greatly regrets' the cancellation.
