One person was trapped in their car after a collision with a van on the A42 near Ashby this afternoon (Friday).

Two fire crews - one from Coalville, the other from Swadlincote - were called to the incident at around 1.45pm.

They then had to try and free the car's passenger from the vehicle.

This meant the northbound carriageway between J12 for Snarestone and Ashby, and J13, for the A511, was closed.

It was around two hours before traffic could move again.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue said: "A call received from Leicestershire Police to reports of a Road Traffic Collision, person trapped.

"Upon arrival, incident confirmed involving a van and a car - passenger of car trapped - extrication in progress."

National Highways East Midlands later reported: "All lanes have been reopened and traffic is running freely. Thank you for your patience."
