A new 'communal, social meeting place' is coming to Ashby this summer.

Street Eats and Beats will run once a month from April to September at the North Street Car Park.

It is a mix of food, music and demonstrations designed to appeal to all ages.

Organiser Abbey Christer-King says she wants Street Eats and Beats to be a friendly, inclusive occasion in the town each month.

"We go across all ages from new born babies, there's no limit," she explained.

"It's an inclusive thing where you can bring your children or your work colleagues.

":We want It to be a friendly space where people can get together, there'll be live cheffing, demonstrations, quirky pop-ups, we'll be bringing a double-decker bus in. There's a bar, the best street food from around the UK.

"We'll change things and rotate every month.

"But we see it as a new communal meeting place, it'll be in the evening so, 5.30 to past 11pm, we'll bring local musicians and a DJ, a friendly vibe."

Abbey says the event, organised with North West Leicestershire District Council, will be a regular fixture in the Ashby calendar this year.

"We're running six events, it'll be the last Friday of the month except June, when it's a month earlier.

"It starts in April and goes through to September.

"It'll be in Hood Park Car park, it'll self contained, where the farmers' market used to be on a Sunday.

"I organise it with my husband we started it in Tamworth three years ago and it was really successful, since then we've taken it to Nuneaton and now Ashby.

"It's very weather dependent, but there'll be some marquees and gazebos up, to cover as much of the area as we can."

Abbey says safety is a priority and that people will be able to attend without any concerns,

"It'll be £2 entry on the door as we have a lot of overheads to cover but there'll be security and we never have any trouble at these things," she added.

"it'll be sectioned off. Under-fives are free and dogs on leads are welcome.

"And it's not in opposition to other businesses, what we've found in other towns is that it brings people in from surrounding areas and villages and they then go on into town to the different pubs.

"It brings economy into the town because it's only once a month. It has a positive effect on the night-time economy."
