Drivers on Nottingham Road in Ashby were left frustrated yesterday (Thursday) as emergency works meant the road was blocked close to the Tesco turn-off.

Leicestershire County Council confirmed that the road was due to be closed from 9pm on Wednesday between Dents Road and the fuel filling station.

The works were so that Severn Trent Water could attend emergency water main repairs.

Notice was only given the night before, which meant many motorists were taken by surprise in Thursday's rush hour.

The One.Network site suggested the Severn Trent works were due to carry on until 4pm on Thursday at the latest.

Signs were later displayed telling drivers Nottingham Road was closed.

One motorist told Ashby Nub News: "The road was blocked near to Tesco in the morning, cars were having to turn around go back the way they came.

"There was no warning of this so it was chaos. The signage didn't help."

Nottingham Road already has works being carried out on the new entrance to the Money Hill housing estate.

Warning signs about those delays have been around for days.

But regular motorists did not expect the latest hold ups.

Some tried to leave for the A511 bypass on Smisby Road, only to find more road works there in connection with the new housing estate being built.

Leicestershire County Council said: "Leicestershire County Council Highways has agreed to a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order.

"The Temporary Traffic Regulation Order will be implemented for public safety for Severn Trent Water to facilitate emergency water main repairs.

"An emergency road closure is required on Nottingham Road between Dents Road and the Fuel Filling Station from 21:00 2nd August 2023. Once the works are completed the road will reopen.

"The proposed alternative diversion route will be signed on site.

"During the closures, alternative routes available to all traffic can be viewed HERE."
