Ivanhoe College confirms name change after public consultation - with logo also updated for Ashby students
Ivanhoe College has confirmed it has now changed its name to Ivanhoe School following a public consultation.
The College announced its plans - which also included a new logo - in June.
Ivanhoe wanted to remove the 'College' part of its name and replace it with 'School' after joining a multi academy trust last year.
It also planned to update the 'knights head' logo to accurately reflect the historical period of the Ivanhoe story - adding that the current one is estimated to be 500 years out of date.
But it said it would be keeping the name 'Ivanhoe' despite admitting the Walter Scott novel it is based on has 'awkward connotations'.
Now the School has given full details of the changes.
The School's website says: "As part of our evolution to an 11-16 school, in May 2022, a public consultation on the proposal to change the name and logo of Ivanhoe College was held.
"We would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond.
"We received eight responses to the consultation from parents of the community.
"Governors and leaders carefully considered the comments and suggestions received during the consultation and have agreed that Ivanhoe College change its name to Ivanhoe School from 30th August 2022 and that we will no longer use the "Houndskull" logo as this particular helmet style is 500 years older than the time period of the Ivanhoe story by Sir Walter Scott.
"The name change also reflects our changed status as we become an 11-16 school and removes the term "Specialist Technology College", a description which is no longer in use.
"Our proposal aimed to build on our strong heritage and local goodwill, and to evidence to our community that we have developed additional skills that reflect our values.
"This can be described as a maturing or 'growing up'.
"The evolution of the brand expression allows for a level of crossover, meaning the old and new brand can co-exist in the short term whilst items such as uniform breast badges can be replaced over time
"In response to the consultation, students will be able to wear old logo uniform until 2026 as we will not expect students to replace items that still fit and are in good condition and will encourage recycling and reusing of current uniforms.
"We would like to take this opportunity to assure you that the change of name will not affect the way in which our school is run. We will remain committed to working together to make a positive difference and continue to improve the life chances of our children and young people through high aspirations and challenge."
