Hands-on Ashby hardware store invites volunteers to help them with 'People Power' Market Street move

An on-the-move Ashby hardware store is enlisting the help of more than 100 volunteers to help them transport stock to a new home in Market Street.

Ashby Toolbox announced this summer that it would be moving from its current site in Coxon Mews to the former Peacocks store at a prominent town centre location.

While much of the heavier stock is being shifted separately, the shop is planning a special chain of people who will be taking smaller items to the new site.

Families and children have been invited to take part in the event which highlights the 'do it yourself' manner in which the move has taken place.

Owner Tom Colclough and his team have been working day and night themselves to bring the new store up to speed for a planned re-opening next month.

But the 'people power' move of stock is planned for October 2, from 12.30, the same day as the Ashby Fabulous shop window day in the town.

Tina Bax, who came up with the idea for the chain of volunteers to help with the move, told Ashby Nub News: "It's a happy co-incidence that Ashby Fabulous is on the same day and we hope local shops will join in with this.

"Our lease on the current shop runs out on October 1, which is why we're doing it the next day.

"Then there'll be a transition period to get the new store ready before we re-open.

"Have we got enough volunteers to help us? Oh yes! We need a minimum of 100.

"It'll be more of a gesture, a lot of our stock is incredibly heavy.

"We had to take all of that into consideration on the day, we will have a sizeable amount of boxes to move, but this will be light stock, such as blister packs of light bulbs. There are 20,000 items in stock here."

Tina explained that the move to Market Street has all been done 'in-house' - and using regular customers and volunteers to help is all part of that.

She added: "Tom has been working on the new shop every single night, he's been doing a night shift after doing the day shift.

"Him and his dad have worked every single day, they're doing their own painting, shop fittings and constructing all the stands.

"The new store is gigantic in comparison.

"People have said that we must've struggled to find a tradesman, but Tom told them that they're doing it all themselves.

"It's quite a feat in itself. Tom's approach while he's been here anyway has to be hands on in whatever he does."
