Ashby is set to stage a 'Big Weekend' double attraction next year - with the REALFest and Proms in the Park events lined up for the August Bank Holiday.

Following the success of the Proms show in the Bath Grounds last month, Ashby de la Zouch Town Council now wants to run it over two days with REALFest, which is set to make its return following two sets of cancellations due to the Covid pandemic.

The Town Council's Events & Entertainment Committee was told that there had been a positive response to the Proms in the Park show which was the first major music event to be held in the town following the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Now the plan is to combine the two shows over one weekend - with RealFest on the Saturday, followed by the Proms 24 hours later.

Town centre manager Stuart Benson explained: "The Proms was a fantastic event with a lot of hard work being put into it.

"It was very well attended, but we only hit break even so we want to do bigger and better going forwards.

"The feedback we got was phenomenal.

"It was just what the town needed, something completely different.

"It was hitting a different target audience. It went down a real treat. There was no negative response."

Cllr Mary Tuckey added: "It was a great evening and I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of it.

"It was good to see everyone out there and enjoying themselves."

The town centre manager also revealed the plans for next summer.

He said: "What we're going to do is have a Big Weekend, with RealFest on Saturday, August 27, and the Proms the next day.

"The Proms will move to the Sunday and infrastructure costs can be shared between the two events.

"Both events will use the same stage along with the fencing, etc."
