Diseased beech tree on Ashby's Bath Grounds is to be felled this week as decay makes it 'very dangerous'
A diseased beech tree at the Bath Grounds is to be felled this week, says Ashby de la Zouch Town Council.
The large common beech tree is situated close to the Bowls Club and has a fungal infection.
The Council says this is causing basal and root decay and has now become 'very dangerous'.
It adds: "The problem was first identified in 2020 by the County Council Arboricultural Services Team, working on behalf of the Town Council.
"Despite best efforts, including further tests being carried out and continued monitoring, the tree is still diseased.
"Given the tree's position, close to the footpath, from a safety point of view the Town Council has had no choice other than to arrange the removal of the tree."
The council says it will be felled this Wednesday, January 8.
But it adds: "On a positive note, the tree will be replaced, and a further 19 semi-mature trees will be planted in the Bath Grounds over the next year.
"This follows recommendations in the Bath Grounds' 'Tree Strategy', developed by Ian Retson, Ashby Town Council Tree Warden, and the Bath Grounds Advisory Group."
