An overgrown churchyard in Measham has been given a new lease of life thanks to a community led funding scheme.

Through North West Leicestershire District Council's small grant scheme, Measham Medical Unit (MMU) Gardening Group has rejuvenated the surrounding borders of St Laurence Church.

The green fingered volunteers received £250 to help fund their 'Blooming Borders' project and make a more attractive space for visitors.

As part of the project, overgrown trees, stumps and shrubs were removed by a tree surgeon whilst members cleared undergrowth to make way for new flowerbeds to boost the overall appearance of the church's borders.

The council's funding scheme supports a range of community activities, initiatives and events that meet the needs of residents.

Grants are available for up to £500 which will need to be match funded by applicants. For more information on how to apply, visit HERE.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at the District Council, said: "Thanks to the hard work and effort of community groups, like MMU Gardening Group, our district is becoming a greener and more vibrant place to live.

"Residents and visitors will be able to benefit through the efforts of these volunteers for years to come and we're looking forward to seeing the new plants at the church in bloom next year.

"If you have a project in mind that could help to contribute to our residents' needs, I'd recommend heading to our website to see how you can get involved."

Linda Plummer, Lead Volunteer at MMU Gardening Group, said: "As part of our Blooming Borders project, we wanted to reclaim an overgrown and uncared for border at St Laurence Church and create a welcoming space for visitors.

"The funding from the council allowed us to pay for a tree surgeon to carry out tasks that we were unable to do ourselves whilst group members cleared undergrowth, weeded and replanted the borders so they could bloom again.

"We're looking forward to building on this work and continuing to improve community spaces in Measham."

MMU Gardening Group welcomes new members who have gardening experience although not essential. To find out how to get involved, contact Linda Plummer on 07452991949.
