North West Leicestershire District Council has defended its decision to remove the temporary barriers in Market Street.
The fencing was introduced to Ashby's main thoroughfare last month to help pedestrians with social distancing guidelines while enabling some businesses in the town to re-open.
But the decision has received some reaction on social media with critics saying it is too early to take them down.
The barriers allowed wider areas for Ashby shoppers but also took away some parking areas on Market Street.
Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "Our decision to remove the barriers comes after extensive monitoring, numerous conversations with businesses and shoppers in recent weeks, and the change to one-metre plus social distancing guidance from Government.
"We appreciate this is something everyone will have their opinion on and we're aware of the negative feedback we received on social media both when the barriers were put in and then again when they were removed.
"We need to save lives and save livelihoods in Ashby, Coalville and the entire district. We're asking the public to be responsible, be sensible and get behind this ambition when visiting our town centres.
"We will continue to closely monitor the situation as we are doing across the situation and make further changes if required."
