Central England Co-op has confirmed it will be moving into the former New Look building in Market Street.

Ashby Nub News reported in April on the possibility of the supermarket leaving its current premises Co-op exploring move into empty Market Street unit.

A spokesperson for Central England Co-op says the new store is "major investment by the Society and will provide local employment".

The Co-op - not the same organisation as the supermarket close by in Derby Road - currently occupies another site at the opposite end of Market Street.

But it also owned the New Look building and is now set to move in after the clothing chain vacated the property earlier this year.

A spokesperson for Central England Co-op told Ashby Nub News: "Our proposals for a new community food store in Market Street, Ashby, would represent a major investment by the Society and provide local employment as well as a valuable retail resource for the community.

"Our plans would see the creation of a modern, environmentally friendly food store that would complement the character and heritage of the area and offer features such self-scan checkouts and customer seating.

"We are currently liaising with planning experts and officers from the local authority at every stage of developing this project and will ensure that we work together to provide a new store that would bring significant benefits to the local community, a convenient shopping experience and a fantastic range of products."
