An Ashby travel agent has told of the struggles to make ends meet because of the Government's recent 'mixed messages' on foreign travel.

Carla Cole, from Villair Travel in Market Street, told ITV News she has had to furlough three staff members and is not making enough money to pay bills.

This evening (Thursday), Spain's Balearic islands, Malta, Madeira, and some islands in the Caribbean - including Barbados - have been added to England's travel green list, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced.

The Balearic islands are made up of Ibiza, Menorca, Majorca and Formentera.

The move means those heading to some popular holiday hotspots will not have to quarantine on their return following the latest review of the travel traffic light system.

But Carla says the recent uncertainty, caused by the Covid pandemicm, meant she could not even afford to close her shop to join the travel protests in London yesterday (Wednesday) - on the off-chance someone might book a holiday.

She said: "The Government is preventing us from selling holidays with all the mixed messages that are out there.

"Mental health has been a big issue for myself.

"I'm worrying about money and the future of the business."

Carla told Ashby Nub News 15 months ago that the approach of the coronavirus crisis would hit the industry hard Ashby travel agent says coronavirus is major concern for travel industry.

In response, the Government said its international travel police has been guided by public health.
