Ashby teenagers take part in week of activities to raise money for children's charity in Packington

Ashby teenagers have been a taking part in a week of fundraising activities as part of the National Citizen Service programme.

A group of students - mostly from Ashby School - have been involved the scheme in aid of the Phoenix Children's Foundation in Packington.

On Tuesday, they were washing cars at the Co-op in Derby Road and on Wednesday they were holding a Bake Sale outside the Co-op.

Thursday saw the group take part in a sponsored walk from Market Street to the Phoenix Foundation where the monies raised are to go towards new toilet facilities.

The Phoenix Foundation is also a Co-op local cause and the store was happy to provide use of its car park on Tuesday.

The NCS is a summer programme for 16 year olds which, for this group of youngsters, included a residential stay in York where students took part in climbing and abseiling at Gilling Castle.

Supervisors Polly Job and Ashby-based Antonia Buswell have been looking after the group this week.

Polly told Ashby Nub News: "My group were doing a car wash at the Co-op on Tuesday and raised around £150.

"NCS is Government-run, and gives 16-year-olds a chance to be more independent in the time between school and college or sixth form.

"It's a way of telling them they're adults now.

"Most of this week's activities were their idea, so we try and facilitate this for them."
