A group of Ashby residents gathered in and around Hood Park to protest against the state of Gilwiskaw Brook.

The Brook runs through Hood Park and the group wanted to show the strength of feeling about the way it has deteriorated.

Residents met with Ashby councillor - and the chairman of Leicestershire County Council - Dan Harrison last Saturday.

They said the Brook is completely overgrown in sections, with huge brambles and nettles covering the watercourse.

It was also pointed out that plastic rubbish is also visible in the water and that it has deteriorated in recent years.

There was also concern for local wildlife with noticeboards stating that water voles live in the stream.

Cllr Harrison met more than 20 concerned residents and a request was made that the Brook and its banks be improved to their former glory.

Mrs Betty Vos lead the deputation along with the Civic Society, Rotary Members and others.

Ken Ward, of the Civic Society, said: "It is to be hoped that the Town Council will be able to work with the Environment Agency to clear the rubbish and to improve this important waterway."
