Ashby's 'Purple Reign' continues as it is given prestigious night time economy award once more

By Graham Hill 4th Feb 2022

Ashby has been given a Purple Flag award again for the town's work in promoting the evening and night-time economy.

The award is similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – and aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm-5am.

Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture.

While, at the same time, promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Organisers say the last few years have not been what anyone expected and they have had to tread new territory in the fight against COVID-19.

But the Purple Flag has been important to towns which held the award during lockdown - as well as being instrumental in the re-opening of businesses as they adapted to the new way of life with the pandemic.

Ashby was praised for its fantastic brand extension by the business sector, clear and proactive initiatives and a picturesque and inviting streetscape.

Cllr John Coxon, leader of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, said: "It is absolutely fantastic that we have once again been awarded the Full Renewal accreditation.

"We put a lot of effort in to our submission and we are pleased that the hard work has paid off.

"Ashby is a lovely town to visit, with a vibrant night time economy which caters for all ages.

"Over the past five years we have strived to maintain and exceed the high standards, ensuring we have a safe and welcoming town for everyone to enjoy now and in the future."
