Students from schools in Ashby mark Holocaust Memorial Day
Students from Ashby School marked Holocaust Memorial Day last week.
They were asked to reflect on the events of the Holocaust by adding their thoughts to a special display board in the school library.
Students posted their own handwritten messages on the display, paying tribute to the bravery shown by the victims and their families, and the sacrifices they made.
Year 10 students also learned about the Holocaust and took part in discussions as part of the school's Personal and Social Development programme.
Assistant Headteacher Roger Skervin, who is responsible for culture and community, said: "It's important that people of all ages remember, and learn the lessons of, the Holocaust so that we can all help to make sure atrocities of this kind are not allowed to happen again.
"And that we treat the people around us with kindness and tolerance."
Ivanhoe College students also marked the day - including a live webinar with a Holocaust survivor.
The College's website says: "In the classrooms at Ivanhoe last week, there was a focus on the Holocaust as Thursday was Holocaust Memorial Day.
"All students had an assembly from Mrs Wild.
"Year 9 were also involved in a live webinar where they were listening to Eva Clarke, who survived the Mauthausen camp in Austria.
"Such real-life accounts are becoming more rare so our students were fortunate to be able to hear about first hand experiences of surviving the holocaust."
