Ashby councillor Graham Allman has spoken of the importance of returning the town's Remembrance Day Service to Market Street.

Last year, the occasion was marked at the Bath Grounds due to the continuing Covid pandemic restrictions.

There was some support for keeping it there rather than bringing it back to the Ashby War Memorial.

But Ashby's Royal British Legion branch objected, describing the idea as 'outrageous'.

Cllr Allman was among those to support the service coming back to Market Street.

He told Ashby Nub News: "A lot of people have fought hard to get it back here.

"Especially the British Legion, of which I am a member.

"it was very important to come back to the War Memorial, to show the respect that is obviously due to the fallen and it was a fantastic response from everybody who wanted to come back there.

" As against the Bath Grounds, which was quite right for the reason of Covid last year.

"But this is the place to be, we would've been the only council in the country that didn't show their respect at their War Memorial.

"Valerie Gale, and all the members of the British Legion, we all attended the council meetings to assist their decision.

"I could understand why others wanted it on the Bath Grounds, but it was the wrong place to do it.

"A lot of British Legion people, like myself are older, with great respect.

"We need to honour the fallen, people who served and are still serving, in this way."

Cllr Allman said his and his wife's family served with the forces - spanning two world wars.

He added: "My grandfather won the military medal twice, in the First World War, that was for gallantry in the field.

"He was a commander in the Royal artillery with a gun crew.

"In the Second World War, my father flew 'string bags', aircraft off aircraft carriers, which was quite something.

"And my wife's father was a sub mariner."
