A village women's football team near Ashby has been sponsored by a well-known opticians.

Specsavers Swadlincote has teamed up with the Albert Village FC's women's team, providing a new kit for the players for their first season in a new division.

The team was formed in June to give local women an opportunity to get more exercise and meet new people.

Since the start, the group has attracted over 20 members and recently joined the Staffordshire Girls and Ladies League Floodlights Division Two.

Gill Brown, secretary of Albert Village FC, said: "We are extremely grateful for this sponsorship.

"The new branded kit looks great, and seems to have been a lucky charm as the ladies seem to be on a winning streak!

"The team are currently joint first in the league after winning their first three games of the season and we couldn't be prouder of what they have achieved so far.

'We are always welcoming new players and we are hoping to join an 11-a-side division next season as we continue to grow."

Rajesh Patel, store director at Specsavers Swadlincote, added: "It's really important to us as a team to support the local community.

"Football is a brilliant way of bringing people together and we are really happy to be in a position where we can offer our support to the club.

"We look forward to hearing about how the rest of the season goes for the team and I'm sure they will all play to their strengths during the games."

Albert Village FC offers football opportunities for over 400 children and adults from the age of four, with a range of teams for girls, boys, men, women, and veterans.
