The A42 near Ashby has re-opened this morning (Wednesday) after being closed due to a police-led incident.

National Highways said the southbound route between Junction 12 and Junction 13 was likely to be shut for most of the morning.

But it was re-opened at around 9.20am.

National Highways posted on social media: "The A42 has now reopened southbound between J13 (Ashby de la Zouch) and J12 (Packington) following a Police-led incident. Please allow time for the remaining minimal delays to clear following the incident."

The dual carriageway was closed off overnight following the incident, which Leicestershire Police have yet to confirm details of.

National Highways posted a series of updates from around 3am onwards and details of a diversion route.

It said: "The A42 in Leicestershire is CLOSED southbound between the A511 (Ashby) and the B5006 (Packington) due to a Police-led incident.

"Due to the nature of the incident, the road is likely to be closed throughout the night.

"If you're caught within the closure, we will be turning you around from the rear of the queue shortly. Thanks for your patience."

The latest National Highways post says: "Due to the nature of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed throughout the morning. Allow extra time if heading to the area."

The route from Upper Packington Road towards Packington, close to the A42 bridge, was also closed off by police this morning.
