Measham Car Boot Sale was closed off by police today (Sunday) after a bomb disposal unit was called in.

North West Leicestershire Police tweeted that there was an 'exclusion zone' in place around the Bosworth Road area this morning.

Witnesses then reported a bomb disposal unit arriving to join the police presence and a controlled explosion took place.

A visitor to the event tweeted: "Controlled explosion next to our car at the Measham Car Boot. All a bit odd."

Another said: "Who the hell would want to bomb Measham car boot?"

It is believed local fire crews were also alerted.

However, the police later said that the incident had been resolved and that people could now return to their vehicles.

The Police originally posted a tweet which read: "Police are in attendance at an incident at Measham Car Boot that has resulted in the closure of the event.

"There is an exclusion zone in place. Thank you to all the public for their co-operation.

"Nobody has been injured."

They added this afternoon: "The police incident in Measham has now ended with no issues.

"Anybody who left their car can now return to collect it.

"Many thanks for the public's help in resolving the incident safely."

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police added: "Police were called to a car park in Bosworth Road just after 9.25am today (Sunday 25 July) following concerns about a package that was found near some vehicles.

"The area was cordoned off and evacuated until EOD arrived to detonate the package.

"After examination it was confirmed the package was not suspicious and people were allowed to return to the area."
