20mph speed limit to be introduced in Ashby Town Centre
By Grace Kennington 16th Mar 2026
Following a request from Ashby Town Council, Leicestershire County Council (LCC) has confirmed a new 20mph speed limit will be introduced into Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
The proposed 20mph area covers: Hill Street, Kilwardby Street, Station Road, Wood Street, Market Street, Bath Street and Prior Park Road.
Along with the addition of the new speed limit, there will also be a new 'Left Turn Only' sign at the exit of Ashby Castle car park, following the request of Ashby Town Council, to reduce the numbers of cars driving the wrong way down Lower Church Street.
Traffic surveys and speed assessments were carried out in January across the town, including Hill Street, Burton Road, Kilwardby Street, Station Road, Wood Street, Nottingham Road and Smisby Road.
Analysis of the mean vehicle speeds found in the survey showed that most of the streets already operate close to or within the thresholds required for a 20mph speed limit.
This means the lower speed limit can be introduced without the need for additional traffic calming measures, reducing costs for the council.
Going forward, Leicestershire County Council will undertake a formal public consultation before the speed limit change is implemented.
The estimated date for the new 20mph speed limit being implemented is expected in 2026/7, following statutory process being carried out.
