  • HS2 is scheduled to pass by Ashby and Measham when the Leeds leg is built
  • Route runs through the site of Field Sport UK
  • Owners have had no contact with HS2 officials
  • Company will carry on until day comes they have to leave

AN Ashby company says it is 'angry and deflated' after being kept in limbo over plans to build the HS2 line through their site - despite the Government announcing the high speed railway will go ahead.

Field Sport UK, an award-winning, family-run, outdoor activity centre based at Lount, had been hoping to learn what the future held for them when Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the controversial route would be built.

But while the London to Birmingham link was confirmed, an update on the phase 2B leg through North West Leicestershire heading for Leeds remained unclear.

The Government said that section was 'under review'.

And that means Field Sport UK's owners are no nearer knowing what will happen to their expanding venture in years to come - with the line expected to be completed by 2040.

"We were watching TV last week when the announcement on HS2 was being made, but by the end we were angry and deflated," said Field Sport UK's co-owner Kelly Wheeler.

Ashby Nub News first reported on company's situation in December - when HS2 officials were caught on the site without the permission.

But the Field Sport UK is still waiting for a definite answer.

"We're no clearer at all, we watched the whole of the televised Boris Johnson announcement in parliament and he was very non-committal about the 2B phase," added Kelly.

"Phase 2B has not got Royal Assent yet, it has to be passed off by the Queen, but now they say it is 'under review'.

"We have to wait and see, there are no guarantees.

"The railway would go straight through the site, through the middle of a clay shooting line.

"Anything is possible, but nobody's been in touch at all.

'Unfortunately our family business is still in limbo and we're still going to carry on until they kick us out.

"We would've liked some certainty.

"We're still dangling on a string, we have no timescales, we know nothing.

"The rollercoaster continues, which is horrible for any business.

"But at the same time, we are growing and what would be nice is, if we had these answers, we could plan a bit for the future.

"We don't know what to do, how can we plan?"

In the meantime, Field Sport UK is going from strength to strength and proving popular.

"Sometimes we try and pull positives out of it to lift ourselves up," added Kelly.

"At the moment, we're still there. This has become our home, our baby, we've built it up and we're still clinging to it.

"But there are so many negatives.

"We all sat and watched it on TV, we were hoping for some answers but in the end we felt angry and deflated.

"But we've heard horror stories of businesses on other parts of the line who've been kicked out and not been paid out, this isn't right. It's people's livelihoods.

"It came out in the Commons though that people affected should now be treated better by HS2 Ltd."
