Police have warned youngsters of the dangers of jumping off the bridge at Moira Furnace and into the Ashby Canal.

There have been recent reports of this happening in an attempt to cool down during the hot weather.

But North West Leicestershire Police say there is real risk of injury or getting into difficulties by being tangled up in weeds.

They have posted an online message warning of the risks.

It reads: "We have been informed of groups of youngsters jumping from the bridge into Ashby Canal at Moira Furnace during the hot weather in order to cool down.

"Unfortunately, that area of the canal is only about four or five feet deep, is full of weeds and other debris and as such poses a risk to life should this activity continue.

"Not only that, but it also causes disruption to the boat trips which run from the Furnace.

"As a local beat team, we understand the desire to keep cool in hot weather.

"However, we also don't want to be the ones who have to attend an incident whereby someone partaking in such activity has broken a limb whilst jumping or has become tangled up in the weeds and debris causing them to be unable to resurface from the water and getting into difficulty.

"If you or anyone you know is doing this or planning to do this, please consider the risks posed to yourself and others before thinking it's a good idea and advise them of the dangers posed."
