Leicestershire County Council has explained the unannounced closure of Bath Street in Ashby centre last weekend.

One of the main routes into Ashby was closed both ways to traffic at the mini roundabout junction with Moira Road.

Bath Street was closed off to traffic from Loudon Memorial with South Street remaining open.

An area was cordoned off outside Newton Fallowell estate agents.

But the County Council did not let Ashby de la Zouch Town Council know the road was to be closed until after it had been shut.

A County Council statement reads: "The temporary traffic regulation was in place for public safety so that Severn Trent Water could facilitate a boundary box installation."

Diversions were set up also some drivers heading from Station Road into Ashby were seen manoeuvring around the traffic cones rather than following the re-route.

The road was closed last Thursday and expected to re-open on Monday.
