A talented 16-year-old singer from Ashby School has been signed to a UK record label after posting a video of himself singing on TikTok.

Sekou Sylla, who is in Year 11, was amazed to discover his video had notched up 3.1 million views and 16,000 comments overnight.

He was even more surprised when he was approached by four record companies, including Good Soldier Records, which is home to well known artists including The 1975, Freya Ridings and Biffy Clyro.

He has since signed his first record deal at the company's London offices and is in talks to sign an American record deal with Warner Music.

You can see for yourself why he was signed up by watching the video clip above.

Sekou, who has been performing his own songs and posting them on Instagram since high school, is now looking forward to working on his first single. He also has a song-writing session lined up at Abbey Road Studios.

He told the Ashby School website: "One of the songs I'd written was sent to Emeli Sande who said she liked it. Now I'm going to be working with people who've worked with singers like Adele, Prince and Lady Gaga.

"I'm still really shocked at everything that's happened but I want to use this opportunity to make the sort of music that people don't make anymore. I want to make music that touches people."

Sekou, who lists Whitney Houston, Prince, Chaka Khan and Celeste among his idols, will move to London to study at the Academy of Contemporary Music from next term, while working on his first musical project with Good Soldier Records.

He said: "I want people to ask 'where has this boy come from?'. I am not copying anybody. I want to be myself. I want to be a legend."

Sekou can be found @sekoumusicuk on Instagram and TikTok.
