Ashby Town Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and Leicestershire County Council have all paid tributes to a dedicated councillor who has passed away.

Nick Rushton was a long-serving councillor locally, having served North West Leicestershire District Council for 35 years.

He had been a member of the cabinet since 2007, as well as serving on Ashby Town Council and Leicestershire County Council.

Cllr Rushton was recently made an Alderman for his extensive public service.

He was first elected to the County Council in 1989, serving as deputy for nine years and leader for twelve years.

He stepped down in 2024 to undergo treatment for cancer.

Speaking about Nick, current leader of Leicestershire Council Dan Harrison said: 'Nick was an outstanding leader of this Council. He had a unique ability to prioritise the common good and his first duty was always to the residents of Leicestershire.

'Nick was a true statesman. His political nous knew no bounds and neither did his sense of humour. He steered the council through tough times, including difficult decisions during austerity, and also saw the council shine on the global stage, with the reinterment of Richard III.
