Traffic was held up for around three hours today (Thursday) due to a van fire on the A42 northbound between Measham and Ashby.

Photos issued by Coalville fire crew show the extent of the blaze which caused traffic be halted this afternoon.

The incident happened between Junctions 11 and 12 of the A42 with one crew from Coalville and one from Swadlincote at the scene.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said that the vehicle was '100 per cent' damaged by fire with 20 per cent caused to the trailer.

The cause is believed to have been accidental, and a fault in engine bay

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue added: "Several calls were received from passers by to say a car was involved in a fire.

"Vehicle and trailer was well alight when crews arrived. Fire extinguished using four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets."

Coalville Fire Crew tweeted: "Crews currently dealing with a vehicle fire on the A42 east bound.

"Smoke is cascading across both carriageways and a road block is in place.

"Thanks for your patience."

Highways England tweeted earlier: "Traffic is currently stopped on the A42 northbound between the A42/ A444 and the B5006 due to a vehicle fire.

"All lanes are now open. Delays are clearing well in the area. Safe journey."
