North West Leicestershire District Council has had more than 4,000 responses to its Car Parking Review survey - which could have an affect on Ashby drivers.

It is a reaction which the council says will 'take longer' to analyse.

The authority also said it has extended its timeframe for the next phase of the project.

Motorists in Ashby are facing a number of car parking changes if plans proposed by the council go ahead.

In May, a public survey was announced as the first stage of the parking review programme.

Among the suggested changes in and around Ashby are:

  • Charges increased in Ashby to be in line with similar charges in neighbouring district and borough councils
  • Two hours' free parking in all council car parks across the district - except Ashby - with charges applied after this
  • North Street and South Street car parks in Ashby changed to become short stay
  • A new long-stay car park at Money Hill in Ashby, including an electric vehicle charging hub.

These plans were challenged by Ashby de la Zouch Town Council and Ashby Civic Society at the time.

Among the criticisms levelled were that the scheme was 'anti-Ashby'.

Now, the District Council has issued an update on the proposals now that the survey has closed.

The council says: "Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our Car Parking Review survey in May and June.

"We received 4,274 responses and more than 120 emails about the proposals.

"We said that your feedback would help us to understand how you currently use our car parks, and how you will be affected by the changes we proposed.

"Due to the number of responses we received, it's going to take a bit longer than we thought to analyse all of your comments and decide on the next steps.

"Changes to parking charges are big decisions, and we want to make sure we have time to consider all options, so we've extended our timeframe for the next phase of the project.

"We aim to give everyone another update in the Autumn but in the meantime, thank you for having your say."
