North West Leicestershire District Council this week marked 50 years since its formation - on February 7 1974 - with the passing of the Local Government Act.
Speaking at the Annual Council meeting on Tuesday, new Chairman Councillor Kenny Horn said: "It gives me great pleasure to be able to say that during our 50th year, we will be marking this milestone in many different ways.
"Tonight, we will be launching our year of celebrations, which we would ask you all to use during the year.
"Throughout this year we will be acknowledging the 50th anniversary in different ways.
"Tonight I will be launching the first of our annual Legacy awards where elected members will be asked to nominate community champions within their wards.
"We would like all ward members to nominate either someone - a person, a group, a charity - in their ward, that has achieved something significant.
"Nominated people will be invited to a thank you event in early 2025.
"Throughout the year, we will be producing promotional videos showcasing the people, places and organisations that make up the fabric of our communities, and how the district has changed over the last 50 years .
"We will be asking members and council staff to volunteer their time to help raise funds to support our nominated charities this year in whatever way you wish. Let's see what we can raise in this celebratory year.
"Our 50th year will culminate in a 'Thank you' event, in February next year where councillors, legacy award nominees and other invitees will come together for an afternoon tea.
"As you can see, there's lots going on in this 50th anniversary , let's make it a special year."
