North West Leicestershire District Council's Environmental Protection Team's CCTV van has been used to spot litterbugs in Ashby.

The council says that the vehicle was 'deployed to a residential road in Ashby De La Zouch after numerous reports of littering'.

But it did not reveal the exact local of the van.

However, the move was also designed to highlight the problem of dropping litter without consideration for the surroundings.

The council points out that there is a maximum fine of £2,500 for littering in place.

It said: "If anyone is caught littering from a vehicle, the registered keeper can receive a fine of up to £450, even if they were not in the vehicle at the time the litter was thrown.

"The maximum fine for littering in the magistrates' Courts is £2,500. It's not worth the risk!"

The Council's Environmental Protection Team's work includes nuisance complaints, private housing problems and monitoring permitted processes within the district.

It conducts investigations to ensure that individuals, businesses and other organisations are compliant with legislation in relation to these problems, which can lead to enforcement.

Planning enforcement involves conducting enquiries into complaints that it receives about breaches of planning conditions, unauthorised developments and other queries that, if deemed to be unlawful, then enforcement action can be taken to make sure offenders are compliant with appropriate legislation and planning permission.

There are two sides to enviro crime - enforcement and education.

Enforcement means ensuring that problems such as untidy land, fly-tipping and litter are resolved.

Education includes running workshops, producing promotional material and working with local businesses and residents in relation to problems such as littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping.
