Ashby MP Andrew Bridgen has re-submitted his letter calling for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign.

The Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire says his decision was down to 'further revelations over the past week'.

Mr Bridgen was referring to the latest 'Partygate' findings from the Sue Gray Report into gatherings at No10 Downing Street which broke Covid rules.

It means a no-confidence vote in the Prime Minister is growing nearer - with Mr Bridgen's letter one of three calls for Johnson to step down.

Mr Bridgen suggested a vote of no confidence is 'close' - and he emailed his North West Leicestershire constituents to explain the decision.

He had previously written a letter of no-confidence in January saying the Prime Minister 'lacked moral authority'.

But he withdrew it when war broke out between Russia and Ukraine, saying it was more important for the country to show a united front.

However, it seems the fresh details of the No10 gatherings has forced Mr Bridgen into another rethink.

He said: "I did believe that during the initial stages of the Russia/Ukraine war that it would be wrong to have a leadership contest.

"There have, however, been further revelations over the past week and there is obviously and rightly still a lot of anger about the culture in No 10 during the lockdown period.

'I and colleagues have put in a letter of no confidence over the past few days and it may well be the numbers are close to triggering a vote of no confidence.

'This would give the parliamentary party the opportunity to register whether they believe Boris Johnson is the person to continue leading the party or not.'
