North West Leicestershire Police have warned shoppers about thieves who have been involved in stealing purses in Market Street.

PCSO Rebekkah Hales has highlighted the problem and urged people in Ashby town centre to be on their guard.

Writing on the Neighbourhood Link website, she said: "Over the last few weeks there have been several purse thefts that have happened on Market Street, Ashby.

"Thieves carrying out this crime are opportunistic and target those who are complacent.

"When out shopping, please make sure you know where your purse is at all times.

"Don't leave it on top of your handbag, zipper undone and visible."

This week, Ashby town councillors called for a meeting with local police to try and get more detailed crime figures after a number of incidents were reported over a three month period.
