A new coffee shop promising to bring 'new employment opportunities and numerous wider benefits' to Ashby has opened in Market Street.

Coffee#1 opened its doors last Friday after moving into the former Lloyds Bank building which closed two and a half years ago.

It adds to the competition already provided by another national chain - Costa Coffee - along with other independent outlets in the town.

Coffee#1 applied to North West Leicestershire District Council for planning permission at the beginning of December.

In a statement accompanying the plans, the company said the 'proposed development represents a considerable investment that will create new employment opportunities and numerous wider benefits to Ashby de la Zouch'.

It added: "The applicant, Coffee #One Limited, is a regional coffee operator with stores in Loughborough Coventry and Birmingham.

"The company prides itself on the excellence of its coffee and the high-quality design of its stores.

"This approach has been acknowledged by the awards won by Coffee #1 over the years.

"With regard to design, the Council will support proposed developments that are well designed and should have regard to sustainable design and construction methods. It is considered that the design proposed within this application is an example of high-quality design but is sympathetic to the Ashby conservation area."

A social media post from the company said on Friday: "Coffee#1 Ashby de la Zouch is officially open!

"The coffee machines are on, our baristas are ready to serve, and the space is warm and welcoming.

"Stop by for expertly crafted drinks, delicious cakes and tasty savoury snacks in a cosy setting—perfect for catching up with friends and family, unwinding with a book, or for working remotely.

"Hosting a community meet-up? We'd love to be your spot—and yes, four-legged friends are welcome!

"Be sure to check out the incredible local folklore-inspired artwork by our talented artist, including Hobbes the helpful Hob, a Griffin at the well, Dolly Shepherd and more.

"Find us on Market Street—we can't wait to welcome you in!"
