National Forest donates new equipment to Leicestershire Wombles as a 'thank-you' for litter picking efforts

The National Forest Company has made a four-figure donation to the Leicestershire Wombles litter pickers.
It was a gesture made as a thank you for the group's tireless efforts to care for the landscape and protect the habitats that wildlife depend on.
The donation – worth around £1,100 – includes 32 litter pickers and 50 bag hoops, all of which will support the Wombles in their ongoing mission to keep the Forest clean, safe and well looked after.
This latest kit adds to the National Forest's continued support for the group, whose dedication and hard work make a real difference right across the area.
To date, the group has collected around 210,000 bags of litter since 2020.
Tom Burton, National Forest community ranger, said: "The Wombles are a shining example of community action in the National Forest.
"Their energy and commitment help protect this landscape for both wildlife and people to enjoy. We're proud to support them with this new kit, and grateful for everything they do."
Sam Laywood, of the Leicestershire Wombles, added: "We're out in all weathers, doing what we can to look after the places we love.
"Getting this support from the National Forest means a lot to us – it's great to know our work is recognised, and the new kit will make a big difference as this kit really keeps us going and allows us to donate to schools and engage youngsters in little picking as well as to support other village groups."
Geoff Walker, chair of W.I.L.E. (Wombles in Litter Education), added: "We're passionate about passing on the importance of looking after the environment to the next generation.
"We visit schools to talk to children about caring for the Forest, organise litter picks so they can get involved, and even donate kit so they can keep making a difference long after we've gone.
"It's all about creating pride in the places they live – and making it fun along the way."
The Wombles have become a familiar sight across the Forest, often spotted with their litter pickers and trademark determination.
The National Forest says this donation will help them continue their vital work across parks, woodland paths and village verges – helping to keep the area clean and cared for, now and into the future.
