Amid the Jubilee celebrations at the Ashby Street Party yesterday (Sunday), a mystery remained unsolved.

A near-20 year old Volkswagen remained parked in Market Street despite warnings that the Jubilee event would be taking place.

The Town Council put out an early morning appeal to move the vehicle.

But the longer the day went on, the clearer it became that the tables would have to be built around it.

Notices were issued a full month before the street party that Market Street would be closed from 6am on the Sunday and that no cars were to park overnight.

But the 2003 VW remained throughout the morning and during the festivities.

And, by the end of the day, it had become a target festive revellers who decorated it in red, white and blue paraphernalia, as our reader photos show.

It was still there as the party equipment was being put away, and we can assume the owner came and reclaimed their vehicle when the crowds had died down.
