Moira Furnace and Country Park officials were removing a nest of wasps that has caused injuries to several people in the area.

The towpath was closed from the footbridge to the lime kilns this morning (Wednesday) while it was moved.

A post on the Moira Furnace Facebook page said: "Please be aware, the towpath is closed for a few hours this morning whilst we are removing a dangerously placed wasps' nest.

"Whilst we wouldn't normally remove a nest as we are well aware of the importance of wasps to the natural order and for pollination, this one has caused injuries to several people so we are removing it for everyone's safety.

"A section of the towpath will be closed for several hours to ensure nobody is stung during the process.

"People are advised to avoid the area until around midday."
