Cian O'Gara began boxing to improve his health, fitness and confidence and soon discovered that he is rather good at it - having recently won two bouts on local promotions.

O'Gara, 23, lives in Measham and works with the fitness team at Champneys Springs.

He began boxing at a time when, like many young men, he was dealing with mental health anxieties.

Cian said: "Boxing became my passion as it helped me to channel an excess of emotions.

"I've been training at motiv8 in Ashby for nearly three years now under Liam Parker and have boxed on many shows throughout the Midlands.

"My last fight was very evenly matched. My opponent came storming out in the first round, landing heavy shots.

"I weathered this and composed myself, taking my time so that, as he started to tire, I came on stronger in the latter two rounds and secured the JBD lightweight title.

"My penultimate fight was in Church Gresley for the Simply Matched promotion.

"A powerful body shot in the second round stopped my opponent. It was a bit one-sided to be truthful, as I was dominant throughout and knocked the opponent down three times. I knew then that I'd become a serious title contender.

"People support me as I'm friendly and approachable.

"I make myself known and always behave respectfully. I like to influence others to do better.

"I'm always in the gym and if I'm not training then I like to go fishing to relax. Next year I'm looking to become an English champion on what's called the 'unlicensed' scene, and then have bouts in the formal structure of England Boxing amateurs with a view to becoming a professional boxer perhaps a couple of years down the line."

Coach Parker is positive about O'Gara and said: "Cian's a good boxer. He's stylish and possibly has a big future ahead of him.'

O'Gara is keen 'to express gratitude and appreciation to my sponsors including my local barber Barberbach"X" Newland videography, Bxsmrt and Integrity Gym Clothing. Other potential sponsors can find my contact details on Facebook at Cian O'Gara or message me at [email protected]."
