Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire invites residents to cathedral service marking VJ Day anniversary

Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire invites residents of the county to a special service at Leicester Cathedral to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The special reflective service will take place at Leicester Cathedral at 5.30pm on Thursday 14th August, the eve of the anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day). The service will offer space for remembrance on the end of the Second World War, which came just days after the devastating atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

According to Leicestershire County Council, "the service is open to the public and invites local people to pause and consider the ongoing instability of the world, the continued proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the deep and enduring need for peace."
Speaking about the service, Mike Kapur OBE CstJ, Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, said: "Marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day gives us an opportunity to reflect not only on the end of one of the darkest chapters in our history, but also on the sacrifices made by so many, including those from Leicester and Leicestershire. It is vital that we remember the past in order to build a more peaceful future."
