Lidl has set out its plans for a proposed new store in Ashby on the site of a former office building off Resolution Road.

The budget supermarket chain has already approached North West Leicestershire District Council - although an official planning application has still to made - about the scheme.

An Environmental Impact Assessment application was made earlier this year.

Now, a final public consultation has been issued to gauge views from residents.

An artist's impression of the planned supermarket has been made available, along with a promise to create 40 new jobs on the site.

However, with the proposed store in an area that already has two supermarkets - Tesco and Aldi - there are fears that traffic congestion could be an issue.

Lidl says: "Vehicular and pedestrian access will be taken from the existing Resolution Road roundabout."

The new 605-home Money Hill estate is under construction in what is already set to become a much busier area.

Lidl's consultation leaflet says: "The new Lidl foodstore will provide a new discount shopping offer for the residents of Ashby-de-la- Zouch and surrounding areas.

"Lidl propose to develop a new store on the site, which will feature a modern and functional design, with an attractive glazed frontage.

"The new foodstore will extend to 1,895 sqm gross internal area (GIA), with a net sales area of 1,251 sqm, 427 sqm of warehouse space and 217 sqm of ancillary area, which will include customer toilets and a bakery.

"Parking at the new foodstore will be made possible through the construction of 106 parking spaces, which include: six disabled bays; 12 parent & child spaces; and two spaces for electric motor vehicles.

"Provision for cyclists will also be made, with the installation of 10 cycle parking spaces near the store's entrance.

"The proposed Lidl store will be open between the hours of:

• 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday (including Bank Holidays); and

• 10am to 4pm Sundays.

"The store would typically receive a maximum of two deliveries per day. All store waste will be stored internally within the warehouse area and will be collected by the delivery vehicle, therefore minimising HGV movement within the site and surrounding area."

Lidl has also listed what it says will be the following benefits to the local area, they are:

• No zero hour contracts;

• Up to 40 new jobs for local people in line with the Living Wage Foundation rate for all eligible employees;

• A brand new store that will provide a clean and fresh shopping experience to meet the needs of customers;

• dedicated in-store bakery and a commitment to providing food from sustainable sources;

• Improved shopping choice and provision of a new mainstream discount foodstore;

• A contemporary building design that will complement the surrounding area; and

• Solar panels to provide a sustainable source of energy for the store and rapid electric vehicle charging points.
