Ashby Netball Club have been celebrating this week after breaking the world record for the number of netball goals scored in a 24 hour period.

The final number of goals was 28,745 - which more than doubled the current World Record.

The event, held at Charnwood College in Loughborough last weekend, also raised money for the Midlands-based charity Kids Village - which is the UK's first purpose-built holiday venue just for children with critical illness and their families.

The idea came from Ashby-based mum Carla Garey who said it was inspired by here one year old girl, Evelyn, who has a rare and incurable health condition called Hirschsprung disease.

Carla said: "We have raised more than £19,000  so far but we'll keep this running for a while longer with the aim to reach £20,000.

"But what a weekend, I don't know where to start.

"I woke up having only had about 45 minutes sleep the night prior, and feeling completely overwhelmed!

"What has been six months of hard planning and preparation, resulted in the most amazing weekend.

"From an idea inspired by my incredible little girl Evelyn's journey - I can't wait to tell her about it when she's older - to the reality of what we achieved when we came together to make something so special really happen.

"We had 52 participants from Ashby Netball Club involved and 20 officials and witnesses that weren't part of the club - as per GWR rules.

"We'd broken the record almost bang on the halfway point so and we quickly new we would exceed the target we needed.

"Interestingly the first one hour of shooting was done by one team of three shooters and one feeder - and that hour, in fact, beat the world record for the number of goals scored in an hour by a team by over 120 goals.

"We then beat that record on 19 of the other 24 hour individual slots we did.

"One of our shooters scored 290 goals in 10 minutes and maintained an average of over 250 goals for all the slots she covered.

"That would have equated to over 1,700 goals in an hour by an individual and the current individual world record for this is 1100 goals in an hour (individual)."

A gofundme page HERE has been set up where people can still donate to the cause.
