Suzanne Iselin, a 12-year-old pupil at Ivanhoe School, has won Ashby Rotary's Young Musician Competition.

A total of 20 young people performed in this annual music festival to the audience in a packed lecture hall at Ashby School last week.

Suzanne played Gabriel Faure's 'Three Songs, Après un reve' on the alto saxophone for her competition piece.

She will now go to the District semi-final at Dixie Grammar School, Market Bosworth on February 26, as will her sisters Constance and Celeste.

Effie Bowman, who attends Twycross School, won the Fred Williams Musicianship Award that recognises young musicians who demonstrate high levels of musicality regardless of experience or technical ability.

Ten-year-old Effie gave an accomplished performance on the harp of 'Fhear a' Bhata' by Kim Robertson.

Other young musicians chosen to progress to the next stage were two more entrants in the Junior Category: Micah Soloman and Constance Iselin.

In the Intermediate Section (11-13 years), two competitors in addition to Suzanne Iselin were: Ava Jenkins and Rebecca Fretwell.

There was strong competition in the Senior Section and trombonist Fred Jackson, trumpeter Celeste Iselin together with another trombone player Nathaniel Slee gained entry to the District semi-final.

Adjudicators Bruce Parry and Tom Stanyard told competitors how impressed they were with all of the performances and gave each of them helpful comments for the future.

Ashby Rotary President Malcolm Davies praised all of the entrants and thanked parents and teachers for their support for the competition.
